My partner and I were the first interns to do their Children's National Medical Center rotation, which just about everyone was looking forward to. We had to rank the areas we wanted to rotate through, and I got my top choices of inpatient pediatrics and the NICU!

My CNMC rotation was two weeks long, with the first week being spent on the 7th floor for inpatient pulmonary and the second week being spent on the 6th floor for the NICU. Inpatient pediatrics wasn't terribly different from inpatient adults, but the NICU was where the real difference was.

The NICU at Children's has over 60 beds and four dietitians, with three different interdisciplinary teams rounding at the same time every morning. The dietitians order the parenteral nutrition for each baby, but here they were adjusting every single electrolyte in real time while talking to the physicians. It was intense, but exciting.

At the end of my rotation, I presented my CNMC case study, which was based on a patient I met during my first week in general inpatient. It was a little daunting to present my work to the dietitians, but I'm very proud of my work and really enjoyed my time at this hospital.
